5 Days in Rome
Rome assaults your senses: ancient ruins, baroque fountains, Renaissance art, and life lived loudly on the streets. Five days to experience eternity.
Rome is overwhelming and perfect. This itinerary prioritizes walking between monuments rather than hitting every site, because Rome's magic is in the connections between neighborhoods and the layering of centuries.
Arrival & Central Rome
Arrive and check in. Find a neighborhood café. Sit with espresso and pastry. Breathe.
Trevi Fountain. Yes, it's crowded and touristy. Yes, go anyway. Throw a coin. The legend is worth the crowds. Explore the side streets afterward—they're Rome at its best.
Dinner in a neighborhood restaurant. Point at what others are eating. Drink local wine. Talk to the person next to you.
✦ Velvano tip: Avoid restaurants with picture menus on the street. Walk one block away from famous sites and find locals eating instead.
The Vatican & Perspective
Vatican Museums early (7 AM opening, before crowds). You cannot see everything. Pick 2-3 collections and focus. The Sistine Chapel is last, so arrive with energy.
St. Peter's Basilica (usually less crowded than the museum). Sit in the basilica's interior. The scale is intentionally spiritual.
Walk the Tiber. Dinner in Trastevere, the neighborhood across the river. Old-world charm, narrow streets, local energy.
✦ Velvano tip: Book Vatican tickets in advance to skip the ticket line. The line is 2+ hours; advance booking costs $5 more and is worth every euro.
Ancient Rome & Forums
Colosseum and Roman Forum. Buy a combined ticket. Spend 2 hours in the Forum itself, walking the ancient streets. It's more evocative than the Colosseum.
Palatine Hill. Fewer crowds. Ruins of imperial palaces with city views. Sit on a stone and imagine empire.
Walk around the Forum at sunset. The light turns everything gold. Dinner in a small neighborhood near the Forum.
✦ Velvano tip: Late afternoon is best for the Colosseum—lines are shorter and the light becomes golden. Visit the Forum in morning light instead.
Neighborhoods & Art
Pantheon. This ancient building is one of the most beautiful structures in the world. Stand under the oculus (ceiling opening). It changes how you understand Roman engineering.
Explore neighborhood streets—Trevi side streets, Campo Marzio, Monti. Gallery hopping, small restaurants, vintage shops. Get lost.
Spanish Steps if you haven't been. Watch the sunset. The view of the city from the top is worth the crowds.
✦ Velvano tip: Rome's light is best from 5-7 PM. Time your afternoon walks to end in a key square during golden hour.
Final Wandering
Castel Sant'Angelo if you want one more monument, or skip it and revisit a neighborhood you loved.
Museum visit (Borghese, Barberini) or just sit in a piazza. Rome's greatest experience is sitting and watching.
One final dinner. The place doesn't matter; the experience does.
✦ Velvano tip: If you can stay a 6th day, do it. Rome needs time. Every corner reveals layers if you're not rushing.
