5 Days in Lisbon
Lisbon is tiles and light and the feeling of having stepped back in time. Five days to wander, eat pastéis de nata, and fall in love.
Lisbon rewards wandering and slowness. This itinerary builds around neighborhoods and pauses, with monuments secondary to experience.
Arrival & Alfama
Arrive and settle in. Grab a pastel de nata (custard pastry) and coffee from a neighborhood spot.
Alfama neighborhood—the old city. Narrow streets, white-washed houses, tiles everywhere. Get utterly lost. Every corner is a photograph.
Dinner at a tascas (casual restaurant). Grilled sardines, wine, the smell of the old neighborhood.
✦ Velvano tip: Lisbon's light is best in late afternoon. Time your walking to end in a key spot at golden hour.
Tejo & Monuments
Walk along the Tejo (Tagus) river. The riverfront is peaceful and reveals the city's scale.
Belém neighborhood. Pastéis de Nata from the original bakery (Pastéis de Belém). It's a pilgrimage. Nearby: Jerónimos Monastery (stunning architecture) and the Monument to the Discoveries.
Dinner overlooking the Tejo. Grilled fish, local wine, watching the light fade.
✦ Velvano tip: Belém is crowded. Explore the neighborhood's side streets away from the main attractions.
Hills & Perspectives
Elevador de Santa Justa (funicular lift) or climb to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte (viewpoint). Both offer city views. Choose one based on energy level.
Chiado neighborhood. Bookstores (Livraria Bertrand is world's oldest), cafés, theater district. Wander without direction.
Fado music in a small restaurant. This mournful Portuguese folk music defines Lisbon's soul. Dinner while music plays.
✦ Velvano tip: Many fado restaurants are touristy. Ask locals for recommendations instead of going to the famous spots.
Day Trip & Neighborhoods
Train to Cascais or Sintra. Cascais is beach town simplicity; Sintra is hilltop palaces and mystical forests. Either is a perfect day trip.
Return to Lisbon. Rest before evening.
Explore a neighborhood you haven't been to (Príncipe Real, Santos, Alcântara). Dinner at a neighborhood restaurant without expectations.
✦ Velvano tip: Sintra's train from Lisbon is cheap and beautiful. The Quinta da Regaleira palace is mystical and less crowded than the royal palaces.
Final Wandering
Return to a neighborhood you loved. Breakfast at a café you've been to. Sit longer than necessary.
Market or museum, or just more wandering. Lisbon doesn't need a packed itinerary to be perfect.
One final dinner. A simple grilled fish and wine at a tascas probably hits harder than a fancy restaurant.
✦ Velvano tip: Most travelers wish they'd stayed longer in Lisbon. It reveals itself slowly.
