5 Days in Istanbul
Istanbul straddles continents and centuries. Five days to cross borders, wander bazaars, and feel the city's magnetic pull.
Istanbul is overwhelming in the best way. This itinerary balances the famous sites with neighborhood exploration, because the magic is in the daily life as much as the monuments.
Arrival & European Side
Arrive and settle in, likely in Sultanahmet (the old town) or Galata (the vibrant new side).
Walk across Galata Bridge. Watch fishermen. Watch the city. Eat fresh fish at a stand on the bridge (cheap and delicious).
Explore your neighborhood on foot. Dinner at a meyhane (traditional tavern) with raki and small plates.
✦ Velvano tip: Ferries are your friend. The Bosphorus ferry from Galata to Kadıköy is cheap, scenic, and how locals move.
Blue Mosque & Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia early. This 1,500-year-old structure is the most important building in Istanbul's history. The interior scale is almost incomprehensible.
Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque). Less famous but equally stunning. Wander the courtyard. Watch call to prayer echo.
Walk through Sultanahmet neighborhood. Small galleries, tea gardens, narrow streets. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the mosques.
✦ Velvano tip: Visit Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque in morning light when they're less crowded and the interior light is pure.
Bazaars & Neighborhoods
Grand Bazaar. Don't go to buy—go to experience. 4,000+ shops, covered streets, the organized chaos of Ottoman commerce. Buy one small thing (tea, spice, tile) as a talisman.
Egyptian Spice Bazaar nearby. Smaller, more focused, more local. The smells are intoxicating. Buy spices if you cook; the quality is unbeatable.
Explore a neighborhood away from tourists (Balat, Çukurcuma). Old wooden houses, local restaurants, the real Istanbul.
✦ Velvano tip: The Grand Bazaar is overwhelming but manageable. Wander without destination. Get lost. Every corner leads somewhere interesting.
Bosphorus & Asian Side
Ferry across the Bosphorus to Kadıköy (Asian side). Walk the waterfront, explore the neighborhood, eat at a local restaurant.
Bagdat Avenue is the upscale neighborhood shopping street. Browse without buying. Or take another ferry to Üsküdar—quieter, more residential, less touristy.
Return to European side for sunset. Bosphorus views are best from Galata, Topkapi Palace, or rooftop bars.
✦ Velvano tip: The Bosphorus ferry is possibly the best $1 experience in the world. Ride it multiple times. Morning and sunset are magic.
Final Exploration
Topkapi Palace if you haven't visited. It's crowded but the Bosphorus views from inside are unmatched. Or return to a neighborhood you loved.
Museum or tea garden. Turkish tea is meditative and cheap. Sit by water if possible.
One final dinner. Seafood on the Bosphorus, or a meyhane in a neighborhood. The setting matters less than the company.
✦ Velvano tip: Istanbul's energy is intoxicating. Most travelers underestimate how much time they need here.
